Camborne Teens Smash School Record in Epic Dartmoor Challenge
Ten Tors 2025 sees Camborne students go further and faster than ever before
Students from Camborne Science and International Academy (CSIA) have made history at this year’s Ten Tors Challenge, setting a new school record and becoming the first full 55-mile team to cross the finish line.
The Ten Tors Challenge, held annually on Dartmoor and organised by the British Army, is known as one of the UK’s toughest youth endurance events. This year’s event saw thousands of teenagers from across the South West tackle distances of 35, 45 or 55 miles across two days, carrying all their food, shelter and navigation equipment as they hiked across some of the country’s most challenging terrain.
New School Record Set by 35-Mile Team
CSIA’s 35-mile team made school history by completing their course at 10:04am on Sunday 11th May – more than an hour faster than any previous CSIA team. The team featured Jago J, Tess H, Adam T, Chloe S, Rosa H and Obi B.
First Full 55-Mile Team Crosses the Line
Also making school history was the 55-mile team, who not only completed the longest and most demanding route but did so as a full team of six – something no previous CSIA team has achieved. Lily M, Noah J, Jem C, Lily B, Jethro D and Hala E finished together at 14:58, a full two hours before the final cut-off. Both Lily M and Jethro D have now completed their Ten Tors hat-trick.
Celebrating Resilience and Teamwork
Emma Haase, Principal of Camborne Science and International Academy, praised the students and staff involved, saying:
“This isn’t just about walking miles across moorland, it’s about grit, teamwork, and mental strength. We are incredibly proud of all our students who took part, and their success reflects not only their personal dedication but the outstanding support from our Outdoor Education staff.”
The school also thanked its Outdoor Education team for their tireless efforts in preparing students for the challenge through early mornings and months of training.
More Than Just a Walk
Coinciding with National Walking Month, the Ten Tors Challenge is not only a test of physical endurance but also promotes the mental and emotional benefits of being outdoors. It’s a uniquely demanding event that focuses solely on young people, requiring months of preparation and strong team spirit to complete.
Camborne Science and International Academy is part of the Athena Learning Trust and is rated Good by Ofsted across key areas such as quality of education, behaviour, and personal development, with its Sixth Form provision rated Outstanding.
The school, based in Camborne, Cornwall, focuses on helping students reach their full potential while building resilience, leadership, and confidence through opportunities like Ten Tors.
