Hold onto your hats, because Camborne’s Mayor Zoe Fox recently hopped into a time machine on wheels! Joining forces with the Cornwall branch of the Military Vehicle Trust, Mayor Fox embarked on a remarkable journey, raising funds for the Royal British Legion while commemorating the heroes of the past.

This military vehicle run, a once-annual tradition that had lain dormant for 3 or 4 years, roared back to life in grand style. Organiser Ben Davis exclaimed, “We are back, bigger and better than ever!”

The convoy, a sight to behold, featured a fleet of historic treasures, including 1940’s Jeeps (Willy’s and Ford), a WW2 GMC Tractor Unit (1943), a Dodge WC52 (1942), and a 1950’s Pontiac Saloon. These magnificent vehicles not only turned heads but also filled hearts along the way.

Their scenic route included stops at Portreath’s ‘WAAF’ site, the local church in the same village, and a touching moment at Illogan Church War Memorial, where a Poppy Wreath was laid in solemn remembrance.

Continuing their journey, the convoy arrived at the Roscroggan Memorial in the Camborne Parish. Here, they were greeted by Steve Nichols, Chairman of the Camborne and Redruth RBL, and Alan Millard, standard bearer. Camborne Mayor Zoe Fox joined the procession, honouring the memory of WW2 Aircrew, who valiantly steered their failing Beaufort AW288 aircraft away from populated areas in Camborne, saving countless lives.

Mr. Davis shared, “In addition to showcasing our vehicles, we also pay tribute to the men and women who built, maintained, and used them. We take immense pride in our association with the RBL, Armed Forces Day, and other meaningful causes.”

Mayor Fox, filled with excitement, hopped into Mr. Davis’s Jeep, accompanied by Mayor’s Cadet Tiffany Davis, and journeyed back to Camborne with the group. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s been a privilege to ride along and so exciting! Thanks to the organisers and the MVT for all their efforts. It’s wonderful to see such dedication and really important to keep history alive and remember the sacrifices of the past.”

This awe-inspiring event took place on December 28th, 2023, bringing history to life in the most thrilling way. For more information, visit the Military Vehicle Trust website: mvt.org.uk
