£14 Million Camborne Community Hub Plan Revealed
Camborne Town Council Submits Plans for Major Redevelopment
Camborne Town Council has submitted a planning application for a £14 million project to transform two redundant listed buildings near the town centre into a multi-purpose community hub. The ambitious plan, part of the Camborne Town Deal investment, aims to revitalise the Basset Centre and White House on Basset Road.
Funding and Features
The project has secured over £14 million in funding, with more than £11 million coming from the Town Deal and just over £3.2 million from Cornwall Council. The hub will host a variety of facilities, including a modern library, a dedicated area for young people, heritage exhibits, and a performance and event space. Additionally, the development will feature an outdoor walled garden, a glass atrium, the town’s first changing spaces toilet, and accessible parking. Renewable and low-carbon materials will be prioritised throughout the construction.
Community Focus
Councillor James Ball, Mayor of Camborne, emphasised that the community’s needs have been central to the planning process. “Our community’s wishes and needs have been our first consideration when planning this hub – from design through to completion,” he said. To ensure the hub meets local expectations, focus groups will be held in the coming months, and residents are encouraged to review the plans on the Cornwall Council planning portal and provide feedback.
Adjustments to Original Plans
Val Dalley, Chair of the Camborne Town Deal Board, noted that increasing costs have necessitated modifications to the original plan. The dedicated theatre has been replaced with a more flexible events space to better serve the community. “The hub’s long-term sustainability has always been a major consideration and, to that end, prioritising local residents’ requirements is essential,” she stated. The project is expected to begin construction in early 2025.
Supporting Local Ambitions
Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for economy, expressed support for the project, highlighting the council’s role in helping towns achieve their community goals. “Our role is to support the towns to realise their ambitions for their communities and it’s great to see the plans for the Basset Centre have reached this significant milestone,” he said.
The Camborne community can look forward to the rejuvenation of the Basset Centre and White House, promising a vibrant and inclusive space for arts, education, culture, and entertainment.
