Dog Owners Warned Over Rising Doo Poo Problem in Callington

Published On: 21 July 2024Last Updated: 21 July 2024By

Callington Town Council has issued a stern warning to dog owners regarding the improper disposal of dog waste, highlighting a serious problem affecting the town’s grounds maintenance efforts. The issue has become particularly pressing as the team carries out grass cutting during the current dry weather.

The council’s maintenance staff, responsible for maintaining recreation grounds, cemeteries, and grass verges, have frequently encountered dog faeces and, alarmingly, even human excrement. Recent incidents have also included the discovery of used condoms amidst the grass, creating a significant health risk when these items are inadvertently struck by strimmers.

Health Risks and Unpleasant Work Conditions

The council’s staff are equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), yet the experience of having waste splattered on clothing and skin is both unpleasant and hazardous. The team has identified specific trouble spots, notably the patch of grass at the bottom of Well Street, opposite Pear Tree bungalows, where dog owners are reportedly failing to clean up after their pets.

Penalties and Legal Actions

The council reminds dog owners that failure to dispose of dog waste properly can result in a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £100. Should the case escalate to court, offenders could face fines up to £1,000. The council stresses that ignorance of the fouling or lack of suitable bags is not considered a valid excuse. Dog waste can be disposed of in any town bin or taken home for disposal with household waste.

Increased Surveillance and Community Involvement

The Pannier Market area has also seen a rise in dog mess, necessitating additional clean-up efforts by caretakers. The council has installed CCTV cameras in this area and warns that action will be taken against repeat offenders.

Callington Town Council urges residents to report any individuals seen allowing their dogs to foul public areas without cleaning up. This measure aims to protect the health and safety of the maintenance team and ensure a cleaner environment for all residents.

By addressing this growing issue, the council hopes to foster a greater sense of responsibility among dog owners and improve the cleanliness of public spaces in Callington.
