Cemetery Memorials to Undergo Safety Tests: Callington Town Council Begins Inspections

Published On: 22 October 2024Last Updated: 22 October 2024By

As part of its ongoing memorial safety programme, Callington Town Council has announced that it will begin testing the stability of memorials in Callington Cemetery on Liskeard Road.

Ensuring Safety for Visitors

As the landowner, Callington Town Council is responsible for maintaining the cemetery as a safe place for public visits. The council’s employees, who have received industry training, will carry out the inspections to check the stability of the memorials.

Any memorials found to be unsafe will be immediately secured with temporary stakes and cordoned off to prevent any risk to visitors. In some cases, where the memorials are deemed highly unstable, they may be laid flat as a last resort.

Trained Employees Handling the Work

Town Council employees have undergone specific industry training to ensure they can accurately identify and test memorials for stability. This process ensures that all inspections meet professional safety standards.

Contacting Families for Repairs

While Callington Town Council does not carry out repairs, it will attempt to contact those responsible for the memorials according to the records they have on file. Families are encouraged to reach out if they have updated contact details for individuals responsible for any memorials that may need attention.

For those needing repairs, the council can provide contact details for local British Accredited Memorial Masons (BRAMM) members who can carry out the necessary work.

Minimal Disruption Promised

The council has assured the public that it will carry out this work with as little disruption as possible and advises visitors to the cemetery to be cautious during the testing period. Signage will be placed around any affected areas to warn visitors.

If you have any queries or can provide updated contact information for memorials identified as unsafe, you can contact the council at 01579 384039 or via email at enquiries@callington-tc.gov.uk. For further details, visit the Callington Town Council Cemetery page.

Thank you to all visitors for your cooperation over the coming months as the council works to ensure the cemetery remains safe for all.
