Waste to Wonder: Flotsam Flo’s Cocoa Sack Stockings Bring Sustainability to Christmas
Businesses in Cornwall are finding new ways to repurpose materials that would otherwise go to waste, and Kate Doran, founder of Flotsam Flo, is at the forefront of this creative transformation. Kate recently turned discarded cocoa sacks from the popular local chocolatier, Chocolarder, into festive Christmas stockings—complete with a unique twist on traditional holiday décor.
From Cocoa Sack to Christmas Stocking
Kate shared that the stockings are lined with upcycled red material, which adds a festive touch by peeking out from the top. “Working with these cocoa sacks was definitely a new experience for me,” Kate noted, explaining the challenge the fabric posed as it frayed easily. With a bit of trial and error, she adapted her stitching techniques to handle the material, using specialised machines and patience to create a durable, high-quality product.
Partnering for Purpose
Kate praised Chocolarder for its commitment to sustainability by exploring new ways to use surplus materials. Her latest creation is part of her wider mission to help businesses breathe new life into materials that might otherwise end up as waste.
Businesses interested in transforming surplus materials into practical, sustainable products are encouraged to reach out to Kate. With an eye for innovation and hands-on experience, she offers a unique opportunity to turn “waste into beautiful, functional products.”
