How Pennon Is Shaping the Future: 10% of Workforce on Graduate and Apprentice Schemes

Pennon, one of the South West’s largest employers, has been recognised as the top company in the UK water industry for its investment in graduate and apprenticeship programmes. The company recently achieved Platinum membership of The 5% Club, a network of employers dedicated to providing work and education opportunities for the next generation.

The award highlights Pennon’s exceptional commitment, with over 350 apprentices and graduates currently on its programmes. This milestone was achieved by maintaining gold-level standards for three consecutive years and ensuring 10% of the workforce is engaged in apprenticeships, graduate schemes, or degree placements.

Driving Careers with Diversity and Opportunity

Sharon Gathercole, Pennon’s People & Culture Director, celebrated the recognition, saying:
“At Pennon we’re always looking for new ways to attract the very best talent so, being recognised for those efforts and having 10% of our employees on graduate or apprentice programs is a great achievement for us.

“We are pleased to be an inclusive place to work that provides fantastic opportunities for those just starting their careers to get their foot in the door. Bringing in new people with fresh ideas through apprenticeships and graduate programmes, we want to see those of all ages and backgrounds join our business – helping us continue to be a forward-thinking and diverse organisation.”

Ambitious Plans for the Next Generation

Pennon has already doubled its graduate and apprenticeship schemes and is setting its sights even higher. The company plans to support 1,000 people in these roles by 2030, cementing its position as a leader in workforce development.

For apprentice engineering technician Matthew Sluman, the experience has been life-changing:
“Apprenticeships are brilliant for people of all ages. I joined Pennon at 30 and have had an incredible experience in learning new skills and gaining the qualifications I need, all while getting paid for my work.

“There is always the opportunity to keep learning. My time at Pennon has been instrumental in helping me discover my ideal career path, allowing me to work with amazing people and building confidence to take on any new challenge.”

Why It Matters

By focusing on fresh talent and fostering career development, Pennon is not only supporting individuals but also strengthening the water industry for the future. Their efforts provide a clear path for those just starting out, making them a standout employer for graduates and apprentices alike.
