German Giant Ehrmann Acquires Cornwall’s Trewithen Dairy

In a significant move for the UK dairy industry, German dairy titan Ehrmann has announced its acquisition of Cornwall-based Trewithen Dairy.

This landmark deal, marking a new chapter for both companies, will see the establishment of a state-of-the-art production plant in Glynn Valley, Cornwall, slated to open in 2026.

Ehrmann’s Expansion and Local Impact

Ehrmann, renowned for its extensive range of dairy products, will produce its popular pudding products at the new facility. This strategic expansion is anticipated to contribute 15% to Ehrmann’s global sales annually. The company plans to invest £20 million into enhancing Trewithen’s processing capabilities, ensuring the highest quality in their dairy offerings.

The collaboration promises significant benefits for the local economy, including the creation of numerous high-skilled jobs. The acquisition will secure the positions of over 260 current Trewithen employees and pave the way for additional employment opportunities.

Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

Christian Ehrmann, Chairman of Ehrmann SE, highlighted the advantages of the acquisition: “Ehrmann has enjoyed success in the UK over the last two years, working with major supermarket chains to bring new dairy tastes to consumers. The acquisition is highly significant as it opens up local UK production; enabling us to reduce the carbon footprint and guarantee the freshness of our products. Choosing Trewithen’s impressively high-quality Cornish milk production, we’re delighted to bring German product innovation together with the very best of British milk.”

Trewithen Dairy, a family-owned business since 1976, prides itself on its high-quality Cornish milk. Francis Clarke, Owner of Trewithen Dairy, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “Quality and sustainable growth are core values we share deeply with our new colleagues at Ehrmann. That’s why we decided to join forces to breathe fresh air into the Cornish dairy industry as we enter our next phase of expansion.”

Economic and Environmental Benefits

The new facility will not only enhance product quality but also support local dairy farmers by providing a stable and lucrative market for Cornwall’s milk supply. The agreement ensures competitive milk prices and guarantees a premium, benefiting the region’s agricultural sector.

Paul Berne, CEO of Trewithen Dairy, stated, “We’re delighted that we’re able to expand our offering, create more jobs in the local economy, and further bring the joy of quality Cornish produce to more tastebuds across the UK. The new products are already proven in other markets, so it’s great to be producing them with excellent British milk to be enjoyed by more British tastebuds.”

Future Prospects

Since 2022, Ehrmann has successfully sold a range of products in the UK through major supermarkets such as Aldi, Morrisons, Iceland, and more recently, COOP. With the establishment of the new production plant, Ehrmann aims to expand its UK-produced range, increasing the distribution of its popular dairy products across the country.

This acquisition represents a significant milestone for both Ehrmann and Trewithen Dairy, blending German innovation with British tradition. As both companies embark on this new journey, the future looks promising for the UK dairy industry.
