Cornish Holiday Cottages Joins the Exclusive B Corp Club: A Major Win for Sustainable Tourism
Falmouth-based company becomes one of the few female-owned B Corps in the UK
Cornish Holiday Cottages, an independent and all-female-run holiday accommodation provider, has secured B Corp certification, solidifying its reputation as a business committed to social and environmental responsibility. This prestigious certification places the Falmouth-based company among a select group of businesses worldwide that prioritise purpose alongside profit.
One of the Few Female-Owned B Corps in the UK
Cornish Holiday Cottages is now one of only three female-owned holiday accommodation companies in the UK to achieve B Corp status. It also joins an elite group of just 78 companies in Cornwall that have earned this certification, standing alongside other Cornish businesses like Cornish Gems and Forever Cornwall in promoting a more sustainable tourism sector.
Emily, Managing Director of Cornish Holiday Cottages, expressed her delight at the certification. “I am beyond delighted to have achieved B Corp certification. The team and I have been talking about communicating our values through the medium of B Lab for several years. Cornish Holiday Cottages was founded on the principles of kindness, honesty and doing right back in 1978.”
Commitment to Community and Environmental Stewardship
As part of their commitment to sustainability, Cornish Holiday Cottages has made a significant impact in the local community with a £10,000 donation to the Children’s Sailing Trust, a charity that has been providing water sports opportunities for young people, especially those with complex physical disabilities or special educational needs, for the past 25 years.
The company’s environmental efforts extend beyond charitable donations. They have implemented several eco-friendly practices, including the use of an electric car and limiting their service radius to 10 miles to reduce carbon emissions. They also prioritise local sourcing, with 70% of resources obtained locally, and maintain a plant-based lifestyle as a team.
A New Era for Sustainable Business
Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, praised Cornish Holiday Cottages for its achievement, stating that their commitment to doing business differently will serve as an inspiration to others. “Success in business is as much about people and planet as it is profit,” he said.
The certification process was rigorous, involving an evaluation of the company’s social and environmental impact, legal accountability, and public transparency. Cornish Holiday Cottages now joins other exemplary B Corps in Cornwall, such as Origin Coffee, Finisterre, and Roddas, all of whom are part of a global movement advocating for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.
Looking Ahead
Achieving B Corp certification marks a new chapter for Cornish Holiday Cottages. The company is committed to continuous improvement and accountability, aiming to increase its positive impact on the community and the environment over time. As a proud member of the global B Corp community, Cornish Holiday Cottages is set to play a leading role in shaping the future of sustainable tourism in Cornwall and beyond.
