Blue Flame Powers Ahead with Electric Vehicle Fleet Upgrade

Published On: 20 November 2024Last Updated: 20 November 2024By

Blue Flame (Cornwall) Ltd, one of Cornwall’s leading heating and electrical companies, has taken a bold step towards reducing its carbon footprint by electrifying a significant portion of its vehicle fleet. The company has replaced 20 of its 55 diesel vans with 100% electric vehicles, marking a substantial commitment to sustainability.

This transition is set to slash the company’s carbon emissions by approximately 60 tonnes of CO₂ annually, depending on fuel and grid conditions. The change aligns with Blue Flame’s dedication to supporting Cornwall’s environment while maintaining its high standards of service.

Reducing Diesel Miles by 200,000

Blue Flame engineers covered over 600,000 miles across Cornwall in 2023 alone, supporting customers with installation, maintenance, and repairs. The move to electric vehicles will cut diesel miles by 200,000 each year, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the company’s operations.

Grant Doe, Company Director, shared the company’s motivation: “Making this commitment is something we feel passionately about. As a proud Cornish business, we were determined to reduce our impact where we could. It didn’t feel right to continue using diesel vans when the technology and performance of electric vehicles are now readily available.”

Supporting a Seamless Transition

Recognising the challenges of Cornwall’s geography, the company has installed EV chargers at employees’ homes to ensure a smooth transition to the electric fleet. This move helps maintain the same level of service, day or night, for Blue Flame’s customers.

To enhance efficiency, the new electric vans have been fitted with thoughtfully organised racking systems, ensuring that parts and equipment are easily visible and accessible. This was made possible through a collaboration with Bott Ltd, a globally recognised brand based in Cornwall.

Grant added, “As well as ensuring our new electric fleet reflects our professional image, we also needed the vans to be thoughtfully organised with suitable racking. We chose to work with Cornish company Bott Ltd, feeling assured we were working with a globally recognised brand right here in Cornwall.”

A Vision for the Future

The 20 newly-branded electric vehicles are already on the road, representing the first phase of Blue Flame’s long-term goal to transition its entire fleet to 100% electric vehicles. Grant commented, “This has been a significant investment, but one we believe is essential.”Blue Flame’s commitment to sustainability is another example of its dedication to serving the people and businesses of Cornwall.
