Rescue at Sea: Missing Swimmer Pulled from Rough Waters

Published On: 3 August 2024Last Updated: 3 August 2024By

In a dramatic rescue operation, Bude’s inshore lifeboat was launched at 12:35 PM on Thursday, 4th July, to assist in locating a missing swimmer at Duckpool Beach, located three miles north of Bude. The lifeboat, along with a rescue watercraft (RWC), faced challenging sea conditions with 26mph westerly winds and a three-foot swell, making the journey to the scene difficult and hazardous.

Swift Response by RNLI Lifeguards

The initial report of the missing swimmer was relayed to Sandymouth’s RNLI lifeguards, who were the first to investigate the situation. Upon arrival at Duckpool, the lifeboat crew discovered that the swimmer had already been safely brought to shore by RNLI lifeguard Leon, who executed a tube rescue to secure the casualty in the turbulent waters.

Casualty Assessed by Coastguard Team

Once the swimmer was safely on the beach, the Bude Coastguard Rescue Team conducted a casualty care assessment. The individual was advised to visit the minor injuries unit in Stratton after having swallowed and inhaled seawater during the ordeal. With the situation under control and no further persons reported missing, the lifeboat crew returned to their station, navigating the same rough seas that had made the rescue mission challenging.

Safety Reminders for Open Water Swimmers

In the wake of this incident, the Bude RNLI lifeboat crew issued a strong reminder to the public about the dangers of swimming in open waters along the coastline, which is known for its constant surf and strong rip currents. Swimmers are advised to frequent lifeguarded beaches and follow safety guidelines, such as swimming between the red and yellow flags and consulting with lifeguards before entering the water.

For those interested in open water swimming, the RNLI encourages visiting safer spots like the sea pool at Summerleaze Beach and offers further safety information on their website.

Remember, in case of emergency, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
