Bude RNLI Lifeguards Warn Against Swimming at Duckpool Beach
Bude RNLI Lifeguards have issued a stark warning to the public about the dangers of entering the water at Duckpool Beach. This picturesque spot, though alluring, is unmonitored and poses significant risks due to strong rip currents. The lifeguards are urging beachgoers to stay out of the water, emphasising that Duckpool is not a lifeguarded beach.
Recent Incident Highlights Danger
On Saturday, 3rd August 2024, lifeguards from Sandymouth were called into action by the Falmouth Coastguard to assist three children caught in a strong rip current at Duckpool Beach. The children were swept out to sea, prompting an immediate response from the lifeguards. Thankfully, they were rescued, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers at this location.
Tragic History: Duckpool Beach Claims a Life
This recent incident is not an isolated one. Duckpool Beach tragically claimed a life in 2023, a loss that underscores the severe risks posed by its strong rip currents. Despite its scenic beauty, the beach’s waters have proven to be perilous, particularly for those unaware of the hidden dangers.
Increasing Number of Rescues in 2024
Bude RNLI Lifeguards report that they have been tasked to Duckpool Beach three times this year alone. Additionally, the lifeboat has been sent on numerous rescue missions to the same area. These frequent call-outs highlight the need for increased awareness and caution among visitors.
Lifeguards’ Urgent Message: Stay Safe
The lifeguards’ message is clear: do not enter the water at Duckpool Beach. They also remind the public of the importance of knowing what to do in an emergency. If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Additionally, they advocate the “Float to Live” technique, a crucial survival strategy for those caught in rip currents.
By adhering to these warnings and staying informed, beachgoers can help prevent further tragedies at Duckpool Beach.
