Bude Bakery’s Stylish Makeover: What’s New Inside?

Published On: 10 March 2025Last Updated: 10 March 2025By

A popular bakery in Bude has undergone a major transformation, with Cornish Bakery unveiling its newly refurbished site on Belle Vue following a two-week closure. The £100,000 investment has resulted in a high-end, style-led space designed to enhance the experience for both residents and visitors alike.

A Fresh Look for a Long-Standing Favourite

Cornish Bakery, which has been a part of Bude’s town centre since 2004, officially reopened its doors on Sunday 9th February. The revamp was marked by a visit from the town’s mayor, Councillor Steven Haynes, who helped celebrate the bakery’s new look.

With a presence in Bude for over 20 years, Cornish Bakery has built strong community ties and provides employment for over eight local people. Staff members used the temporary closure as an opportunity for retraining, ensuring the team is ready to deliver an even better experience.

Bigger, Better and More Stylish

One of the biggest changes is the increase in seating capacity, which has grown from 32 to 37, catering to the high demand for space. Customers can now enjoy their coffee and pastries in banquette-style seating, along with leather-upholstered chairs and stools designed for comfort.

A stunning new marble counter takes centre stage, showcasing an array of cakes and viennoiseries, while ‘Costa Rica’ red feature tiling adds a touch of sophistication. The open kitchen layout allows visitors to see the baking process in action, with products freshly made on site every day.

Sustainability Meets Style

As part of the renovation, Cornish Bakery collaborated with Clayworks, a Cornwall-based company known for its environmentally responsible designs. A newly installed Clayworks Clay wall brings an earthy aesthetic while allowing the walls to breathe, improving air quality. Adding to the ambience, the bakery now features pendant lighting from Cornish designer Tom Raffield.

Faster Coffee Service and Added Convenience

With coffee now the bakery’s best-selling product, the company has introduced a dedicated coffee counter featuring a La Marzocco coffee machine and two grinders. This upgrade is set to speed up service times for customers.

A new cold-water tap has also been installed, giving walkers and cyclists the chance to refill their water bottles while on the go. Cornish Bakery continues its partnership with B-Corp certified specialty coffee supplier Union, which works directly with farmers to improve coffee quality and livelihoods.

A Bakery Experience Like No Other

Customers can expect the same much-loved selection of baked goods, including Cornish Bakery’s award-winning pasties and sausage rolls, praised by food critic Giles Coren. The menu also features a range of viennoiseries and cakes, alongside new additions that have quickly become customer favourites, such as the twice-baked Pistachio Croissant with homemade frangipane and pistachio cream, and the Shakshuka Croissant filled with spiced roasted peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, and cheesy bechamel sauce.

Welcoming Customers Old and New

Experienced bakery manager Audrey Price and assistant bakery manager James Martin continue to lead the team, ensuring high-quality service from 8am to 4.30pm daily.

Managing director Mat Finch highlighted the company’s commitment to investing in its properties and people, stating, “We are proud to invest in our Cornish roots by refurbishing our Bude bakery. We have been in Bude for over 20 years and we love being part of the community here, it is a fantastic place with a brilliant and thriving community of people who really take pride in their stunning local environment.”

Mat added, “After all this time in Bude, it was clear that a complete revamp was required, given that our brand has changed significantly, our product range has evolved into a more fulsome bakery experience and coffee has become our best seller. Now, I am fully confident that we’ve made it the premium, stylish space and experience for both residents in, and visitors to, the town, including their dogs! We’re looking forward to welcoming customers, new and old, into our beautiful new space.”
