From Writing as a Child to Published Author: Cornwall Student’s Fantasy Worlds Come to Life
A Cornwall College student has turned his childhood passion into reality, becoming a published author with three fantasy books now available on Waterstones and Amazon.
A Young Author’s Journey
Joshua Holten, a Progression Pathways student at Cornwall College St Austell, has been making waves in the literary world with his book series Twisted Valley, Twisted Valley 2: The Mystery of the Whisper Witches, and Mother of an Empire.
To support his success, the college has provided Joshua with opportunities to promote his books on campus, hosting book signings where staff and students can meet him and purchase signed copies.
“These events have helped him engage with the college community while gaining recognition for his work,” a statement from the college said.
From Childhood Stories to Published Fantasy
Joshua’s passion for writing started at a young age, focusing initially on nature before developing an interest in magical and mystical storytelling.
“I used to write books as a child and focused on my love of nature, but later I started to develop a new passion for more magical and mystical ideas, which is where the idea for my first published book, Twisted Valley, came from,” he said.
The story follows six-year-old Fergus, a lonely schoolboy whose life is turned upside down when he’s forced by mysterious magic to live deep in the woods among fairy-tale characters, witches, dragons, and an evil owl queen. Fergus’s mission is to uncover a mystery that has trapped the woodland and its creatures under a powerful curse.
Building on the success of his debut, Joshua continued developing his storytelling.
“My second and third books allowed me to push my imagination even further. I love writing stories that transport people into other worlds, full of magic, mystery and adventure,” he said.
Overcoming Challenges with Support
Joshua’s journey has been one of resilience. Overcoming early life challenges, he found stability and encouragement with Diane Hollies, a Shared Lives carer in Cornwall.
Calling her his “supergran,” he dedicated his first book to Diane, recognising her unwavering support.
“She helps me with concentration and life skills like cooking or using different things around the house. Di also provides me with a great support system, which is amazing,” he explained.
With the backing of Cornwall College and those around him, Joshua’s achievements continue to inspire others, proving that determination and the right opportunities can turn dreams into reality.
