Rare Steam Reunion Set for Bodmin – Classic Locos Back on the Tracks for 3-Day Gala

A trio of classic steam locomotives that once ruled Cornwall’s branch lines will reunite at Bodmin Railway this month, in a rare line-up not seen in seven years.

Running from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th May, the Spring Steam Gala at Bodmin General promises three packed days of nostalgic steam action, part of the Railway200 celebrations marking 200 years since the first passenger train.

Three Classic Locos, One Historic Line-Up

Bodmin Railway will bring together three iconic Great Western Railway (GWR) branch line locomotives — the Pannier, Prairie, and Auto-tank — in what organisers are calling a “truly historic line-up”.

Joining Bodmin Railway’s own 5552 and 5553 will be guest engines 7714 and 1450 from the Severn Valley Railway. These engines were once the backbone of local travel and freight across Cornwall and will now steam together again through Bodmin’s steep 1 in 40 gradients.

“This is a special chance to see these classic branch line locomotives running together again,” said Chris Hatton, Operations Manager at Bodmin Railway. “We’re proud to be celebrating Railway200 with an event that not only honours Cornwall’s rich railway heritage but also brings it to life for a new generation.”

A Full Weekend of Steam, Stories and Shunting

The event promises more than just locomotive action. Visitors can expect:

• Unlimited travel with 1, 2, and 3-day rover tickets – and Kids for a Quid

• Rare First-class rides in a restored Victorian carriage (Saturday & Sunday only)

• Interactive fun for younger visitors including meeting the drivers and helping with shunting using the Port of Par loco ‘Judy’

• Freight re-enactments, recreating scenes of early-morning milk and newspaper deliveries

• Pump trolley rides, working goods trains and behind-the-scenes tours of the heritage workshop

• Live steam action on steep gradients – a rare test for these historic engines
