Sally Spens Exhibition Now Open at Trebah Garden Visitor Centre
Trebah Garden is currently hosting a remarkable exhibition featuring the works of Sally Spens. The exhibition, which is open to the public free of charge, showcases a collection of Spens’ paintings, drawings, and etchings, all inspired by the natural world. Visitors are welcome to explore the exhibition at the Visitor Centre, where they can immerse themselves in the beauty and intricacy of Spens’ art.
Sally Spens is renowned for her detailed and intricate etchings that have gained international recognition. Her work has been exhibited and collected globally since 2013, including a notable presence at the European Cultural Centre in Venice during the 2022 Art Biennale. Before venturing into etchings, Spens had a successful career as a textile designer, working in major fashion capitals such as London, New York, and Japan. This transition from textiles to etchings reflects in her work, often drawing parallels between the two mediums in terms of the translation of drawing into print.
The exhibition not only highlights Spens’ artistic talents but also offers insights into her working practice and ideas through short texts accompanying the artworks. This unique aspect provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the artist’s process and the inspiration behind her creations.
Sally Spens’ contributions to the world of textile design, in partnership with Bentley & Spens, have been recognised and archived by the Victoria & Albert Museum since 1989. Her work, including the ‘Kimono – Kyoto to Catwalk’ exhibit, has been celebrated on a global scale, showcasing her influence and legacy in the design world.
Through her etchings, Spens explores the natural world, drawing inspiration from botanical works, nature, observation, and memory. She describes etching as a “natural progression” from her work in textiles, highlighting the cohesive relationship between drawing and print in her art.
The exhibition at Trebah Garden offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the captivating world of Sally Spens. It is a testament to her lifelong dedication to exploring the intersections between nature, art, and design. Trebah Garden invites everyone to visit the Visitor Centre and enjoy this free exhibition, celebrating the talent and vision of Sally Spens.
