Celebrating Cornwall: Alasdair Hoswell’s Journey from Dyslexia to Award-Winning Author
Alasdair Hoswell, a 33-year-old Cornish author and illustrator, has rapidly gained recognition as a celebrated storyteller in the region.
Recently featured in the ‘One in a Million’ segment of ‘Pick Me Up!’ Magazine, Alasdair’s contributions to children’s literature have captured the hearts of many. The magazine’s exclusive interview offers a glimpse into his journey and achievements, highlighting his resilience and dedication.
Award-Winning Success
Alasdair’s hard work and talent were recently recognised at the Holyer an Gof Publishers’ Awards evening, organised by Gorsedh Kernow. During the event, he received a Winner’s award from Pol Hodge, the Grand Bard of Gorsedh Kernow. Reflecting on this honour, Alasdair expressed his joy, stating, “I am overjoyed to have received my first award as an author! Such a wonderful evening – and congratulations to all the other winners and well done to the other nominees. I am proud to say I am now an award-winning author!”
His book, ‘Cornwall, The Land You Can Count On’, celebrates Cornwall’s rich heritage and culture, and this accolade marks a significant milestone in his career. Alasdair added, “It really means the world to me. Thank you to everyone who has read my books, and I am looking forward to writing and creating more children’s books for Cornwall.”
Battling Dyslexia
Alasdair’s journey to becoming an author was not without challenges. He struggled with reading and writing in school due to dyslexia, vividly recalling how the words would spin around the page. Despite these difficulties, he has become a role model, demonstrating that dyslexia couldn’t stop him from achieving his dreams. Alasdair encourages others facing similar challenges by saying, “Don’t give up if things get tricky. Keep trying and find new ways that suit your learning style. As a visual learner, I love using pictures and drawings to help me.”
A Vision for Cornwall
Being a Cornish author holds a special significance for Alasdair. He shared, “Being a Cornish author is incredibly special to me. Our beautiful Cornwall is rich with history and culture, and I want to inspire others to celebrate and cherish it through my books. Winning this award is a dream come true, and I hope it encourages other aspiring writers to pursue their passions and tell their own unique stories.”
Alasdair is actively promoting Cornwall through his captivating children’s books and has several upcoming author events this year, including sessions at Kresen Kernow and Geevor Tin Mine in Cornwall.
