Sky Spectacle: How to Catch the Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower Lighting Up Cornwall This Weekend
Stargazers across Cornwall are being urged to look up this Bank Holiday as the Eta Aquarids meteor shower reaches its peak, promising a dazzling display in the early hours of Monday, 5th May.
Interest has soared, with searches for ‘meteor shower’ spiking by an incredible 996%, and ‘Eta Aquarids’ itself up by 1083% in the past day. Anticipation is building as up to 50 meteors per hour are predicted during the peak, particularly across the southern parts of the UK.
What is the Eta Aquarids?
The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is a yearly event that occurs when Earth passes through the debris trail left by Halley’s Comet. Known for its swift and bright meteors, the display has been active since 19th April 2025, but Monday morning will offer the best chance to see it in full force.
Top Tips for Meteor Spotting
With so many eager to catch this celestial event, Parkdean Resorts has shared essential advice to help maximise your viewing experience:
Get up high
The higher your vantage point, the better your chances of avoiding clouds and light pollution. Exploring your local area to find a quiet, elevated spot could make all the difference.
Adjust your eyes ahead of time
To fully enjoy the meteor shower, allow up to 30 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the darkness. Avoid bright lights, including phone screens, in advance to help your vision adjust naturally.
Locate the radiant
Identifying where the meteors will appear from can enhance your experience. Using a star chart or downloading a star chart app can help you find the radiant point of the Eta Aquarids and see exactly what is overhead.
Escape to the Countryside for the Best Views
For those wanting to escape urban light pollution, Parkdean Resorts suggests heading to rural areas or even booking a last-minute break to one of their holiday parks near official dark sky sites. Breaks are available from just £139 for those looking to combine stargazing with a weekend getaway.
