Revolutionary Safety Rope System Sets Cornwall’s TR7 Skatepark Apart: The Only Indoor Skatepark of Its Kind in Europe
TR7 Indoor Skatepark Becomes the Safest Skatepark in Europe
TR7 Indoor Skatepark CIC, located in Cornwall, has solidified its position as a unique and pioneering facility in Europe by reintroducing a revolutionary safety feature that ensures a safer skateboarding experience for all. This distinctive feature, a specially designed rope system, allows skateboarders of any ability level to participate without the fear of injury, making TR7 the only indoor skatepark of its kind across the continent.
The Return of a Game-Changing Safety Feature
Earlier this year, TR7 Indoor Skatepark CIC reopened at its new 370-square-foot facility in Roche after relocating from its former Newquay site. The skatepark boasts an array of features, including a mini ramp, rails, ledges, hips, and an open area tailored for beginners. However, despite its impressive offerings, TR7 was missing a key element that had set its previous location apart—the innovative rope system.
Thanks to a collaboration with local company Vector Rope Access, TR7 has now reinstalled this unique safety mechanism. The system acts as both a safety harness and a handle, allowing skaters to maintain their balance while using the mini ramp. This feature is especially beneficial for beginners, enabling them to attempt tricks and master the rhythm of the ramp without the usual risk of falls and injuries.
Martina Biquard, who runs TR7 alongside her husband, Chaz Merryweather, expressed her excitement about the system’s return: “We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get the rope system installed, and we’re glad to say that now it’s up and running—so swing through to give it a go!”

A New Way to Learn and Build Confidence
Chaz Merryweather highlighted the importance of the rope system in making skateboarding accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities or those recovering from injuries. “Helping different individuals of all ages with different disabilities is important to us, and this rope system does that as it takes away the risk of injury. It helps build confidence and is a great way to learn—skaters take away what they’ve learned and can use it on ramps at their local park,” he explained.
The rope system has sparked some debate within the skateboarding community, with critics labelling it as “cheating.” However, supporters argue that it offers a safer and more effective way for beginners to learn, reducing the risk of injury and helping them build skills gradually. One skater, who is also a physiotherapist, shared their positive experience: “I recently learned to ollie using an overhead rope and it fast-tracked me so much. It’s just a smart and safe way to break it down and reduce the injuries. As you progress, you rely less on the rope.”

A Safe Haven for the Cornish Skateboarding Community
TR7 Indoor Skatepark CIC is more than just a facility; it is a vital community hub for skateboarders in Cornwall. Martina and Chaz are dedicated to providing a welcoming and inclusive space where skaters of all backgrounds and abilities can come together. During the busy summer months, TR7 offers an escape from the crowded outdoor skateparks, while in winter, it provides a dry and comfortable environment away from the rain.
The skatepark also hosts a variety of community events, such as the monthly “Board Mums” event for mothers and screenings like the recent showing of “SMiLe,” organised in collaboration with The Ben Raemers Foundation to address mental health and prevent suicide. Additionally, TR7 runs events to support the LGBTQ+ community, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity.
A spokesperson for the skatepark emphasised their mission: “Skateboarding is for everyone and we want all skaters to feel welcome and included at TR7. Skateboarding is growing colossally worldwide, and we’re proud to represent Cornish skateboarders. We want to once again provide a safe space where anyone interested can learn and practice, regardless of the weather or their abilities.”
As TR7 Indoor Skatepark CIC continues to evolve and innovate, it remains a beacon for the skateboarding community in Cornwall and beyond, proving that safety and inclusivity can go hand in hand with the thrill of skateboarding.
