Extra 10-carriage service to run after Friday night home games

Cornish Pirates fans can now stay to see the final whistle without worrying about missing the train home, thanks to a new late-night service added by Great Western Railway (GWR).

The new train, which will run from Penzance to Plymouth, will depart at 22:30 after Friday night home games, making it much easier for supporters to get home without leaving early. It follows a new arrangement between the Cornish Pirates and GWR aimed at tackling transport issues that have previously held fans back.

New deal tackles a key problem for supporters

Anthony Whyte, Cornish Pirates director, said the move came after listening to supporters.

“This collaboration is massively important for the club and having those extra numbers at the Mennaye going crazy really does help with the atmosphere,” said Anthony.

“When we took over as a consortium, we asked the fans what is the stumbling block and why are you not coming to matches? Many of them said it was transport. So, having reached out to GWR we are really grateful that this extra service is being provided.”

Full list of stops and dates confirmed

The new 10-carriage service will call at:

  • St. Erth

  • Hayle

  • Camborne

  • Redruth

  • Truro

  • St. Austell

  • Par

  • Lostwithiel

  • Bodmin Parkway

  • Liskeard

  • Menheniot

  • St. Germans

  • Saltash

The train will arrive at Plymouth at 00:29.

The first of these services will run on Friday 29th August, with another confirmed for Friday 12th September.

GWR backs local fans and economy

A spokesperson for GWR, Station Manager for West Cornwall, said the company was pleased to help solve the problem.

“This really shows the importance of good local transport links to the local economy and the communities we serve – which is at the heart of what we do.

“I am really pleased we have been able to invest in this, finding a solution for fans, and am looking forward to seeing the success of this new service in the coming weeks.”

The new service is expected to give a welcome boost to attendance at the Mennaye and make life easier for fans across Cornwall and beyond.
