St Austell Town Council Marks 15th Anniversary with Former Mayors’ Gathering

Published On: 23 October 2024Last Updated: 23 October 2024By

St Austell Town Council recently celebrated its 15th anniversary with a special gathering at St Austell Library, where former Mayors joined the current Mayor, Julian Young, for a coffee and conversation. The event, held to mark the occasion, also honoured Derek Collins, Mayor in 2014/15, who has since sadly passed away. During the gathering, Julian presented each former Mayor with a picture of themselves in their Mayoral robes.

Reminiscing on 15 Years of Growth

Reflecting on the council’s growth, Julian said, “We had a lovely couple of hours catching up at St Austell Library this morning reminiscing about old times. I wasn’t on the Town Council when it was formed in 2009, but it has certainly come a long way since that time. 15 years ago, we had assets totalling £100,000 and on the 31st March 2024 we had assets totalling £784,000.”

The council has not only increased its assets but has also grown into a well-respected service provider, making a difference to the parish of St Austell.

Expanding Responsibilities

Since its formation in 2009, St Austell Town Council has taken on a variety of local responsibilities, including 17 parks and open spaces, the town centre’s CCTV monitoring service, Priory Car Park and its toilets, St Austell Library, and several allotments. The council also runs a small grants scheme and serves as a planning consultee, reviewing around 10 planning applications every 5 to 6 weeks and submitting recommendations to Cornwall Council.
