Geevor Tin Mine Welcomes One Millionth Visitor!
On Wednesday, 2nd October 2024, Geevor Tin Mine celebrated a significant milestone as Pendeen Community Heritage welcomed St Hilary School, marking the one millionth visitor to the site since it opened as a museum and visitor attraction in 1993. This achievement highlights the success of Geevor’s award-winning educational programme, making it a fitting occasion to celebrate with the next generation of mining enthusiasts.
A Milestone in Mining History
This landmark moment is a testament to the transformation of Geevor Tin Mine from a closed mine into a thriving museum and multi-award-winning visitor experience. Over the years, Geevor has become a key part of the Cornish Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, drawing visitors from around the world to learn about Cornwall’s rich mining heritage.
Tamsin Daniel, Protected and Historic Landscapes Manager at Cornwall Council, praised the achievement, stating, “Geevor’s success reflects the ongoing fascination with Cornwall’s mining history and the impact it continues to have on local culture and identity.”
Education and Future Opportunities
Geevor Tin Mine is renowned for its contributions to education, offering unique learning experiences to primary, secondary, and university students, and providing work experience opportunities in various aspects of the heritage site’s operation. As part of the Cornish Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, the mine continues to inspire young people to explore careers in STEM fields, which are vital to Cornwall’s future development, including the region’s transition to renewable energy and the extraction of critical minerals such as lithium.
Cllr Martyn Alvey, Portfolio holder for Environment and Climate Change, added, “Geevor plays a crucial role in encouraging communities and visitors to explore Cornwall’s rich mining history and its links to today’s technological advancements.”

Sally Weston, World Heritage Site Lead, emphasised Geevor’s role in supporting the wider Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, helping to share stories of the region’s mining past and how they continue to influence modern-day innovations.
