29/09/2024 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Wind & Rain

Published On: 29 September 2024Last Updated: 29 September 2024By

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for wind and rain, covering parts of southwest England and Wales on Sunday. Residents and travellers should prepare for potential disruption throughout the day and into the evening, with conditions expected to improve by Monday morning.

Strong Winds Expected Across the Southwest

The first weather warning for wind, in effect from 09:00 today until 23:59 tonight, predicts gusts of up to 55 mph in coastal areas, with more exposed spots potentially experiencing winds exceeding 60 mph. This could lead to challenging conditions, particularly for those travelling by road, rail, or air.

Key areas likely to be affected include coastal routes and sea fronts, where large waves and spray could make driving hazardous. Delays are expected for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, and some short-term power outages may occur. Bus and train services could also see interruptions, with some journeys taking longer than usual.

For those heading out, it’s advised to check road conditions and public transport timetables before travelling, as there may be significant delays. The winds are forecast to ease inland by Sunday evening, but coastal regions may experience gusty conditions into the night.

Heavy Rain to Follow in the Evening

In addition to strong winds, a second yellow weather warning for rain will be in place from 16:00 today until 09:00 tomorrow morning. This could bring heavy rainfall to areas across southwest England and south Wales, potentially causing flooding and further disruption to travel.

Between 20-30 mm of rain is expected to fall in these regions over the next 9-12 hours, with some areas – particularly higher ground in south Wales, Dartmoor, and the Dorset Downs – seeing as much as 50-80 mm. Surface water flooding is likely, making journeys by road slower and more dangerous. The Met Office also warns that a few homes and businesses could experience flooding.

Residents are encouraged to check if their property is at risk of flooding and prepare accordingly by creating a flood plan or emergency kit.

Staying Safe in the Storm

If you live near the coast, it’s essential to remain cautious. Large breaking waves can pose serious risks, even to those on shore, and anyone walking near cliffs is advised to know their route and keep pets on leads. In the event of an emergency, contact the Coastguard by calling 999.

For those travelling or living in areas with strong winds or heavy rain, it’s important to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, as conditions and warnings can change quickly. Always check for updates before setting out, and consider amending your plans if necessary.

The Met Office has designated both warnings as “yellow” due to their medium likelihood and low impact, but disruptions remain possible.

Prepare accordingly to avoid delays and stay safe during the adverse weather conditions set to hit the region later today.
