New A30 Upgrade Promises Tourism Boom in Cornwall, Says Holiday Provider

Published On: 15 July 2024Last Updated: 15 July 2024By

Cornwall, long celebrated as a premier holiday destination in the UK, has often been hampered by poor travel connections and lengthy journey times.

However, this is set to change with the completion of a significant road project designed to make the Cornish coastline more accessible to visitors.

The new dual carriageway on a stretch of the A30, between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross roundabouts, officially opened after a four-year project costing £330 million. This upgrade is expected to revolutionise travel to Cornwall, reducing congestion, enhancing journey reliability, and boosting local connectivity.

Parkdean Resorts Predicts Positive Impact on Tourism

Ashley Crawshaw, Regional Director at Parkdean Resorts, shared his optimistic view on the new development. “While Cornwall has always been a popular holiday destination, it has famously been a long drive away for most. However, the multi-million-pound road project will transform Cornwall’s tourism industry, making it more accessible than ever,” said Ashley.

He emphasised that the objectives of the new road were clearly defined from the outset: improving safety, reducing congestion, enhancing journey reliability, boosting local connectivity, protecting and enhancing the environment, and promoting economic growth within the county.

Economic Benefits and Community Impact

Ashley highlighted that with the road now open, these objectives are expected to come to fruition, benefiting not only the tourism sector but also the local community. “The improved accessibility bodes well for Cornwall’s economic future. The influx of tourists is expected to drive investment in tourism-related businesses, which will, in turn, create jobs for the local area,” he added.

Strategic Importance and Funding

The A30 is a road of strategic importance and part of the UK’s Strategic Road Network. This significance is underscored by the £8 million contribution from the European Regional Development Fund, alongside an additional £12 million allocated for the construction phase. The project, which began in March 2020 and concluded in 2024, aligns with the Government’s Roads Investment Strategy.

The new dual carriageway between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross is a major step forward in improving Cornwall’s connectivity and ensuring that the region can continue to attract visitors while supporting local businesses and communities.

As Cornwall stands to benefit from this infrastructural improvement, stakeholders across the region are looking forward to a brighter, more connected future.

Where is this “boom” in tourism going to get the staff it would need due to no housing for the staff?
