Truro & Penwith College Students Tour Kaolin Processing Plant

Engineering students from Truro & Penwith College were given an exclusive tour of Imerys’ kaolin processing plant at Par Dryer & EMC. The tour provided the students with a comprehensive overview of the various career paths available at the renowned industrial company.

In-Depth Tour by Industry Experts

The tour was conducted by Mike Haspell, Engineering Manager – UKP Drying Process, and Alan Berry, Site Engineer. Both professionals generously dedicated their time to guide the next potential batch of apprentices through the intricacies of the plant’s operations.

Student Bill shared his excitement, stating, “It was great to see what goes on behind the scenes at Imerys and find out what they do and where their products go.” Fellow student Carter was equally impressed, adding, “I was impressed by the size and power of the machines, it was great to be shown around and see how the plant works.”

Hands-On Learning Experience

The students particularly enjoyed visiting the site engineering workshop, where they could relate to the machinery they had previously used in college, such as the lathe and welding equipment.

Andy Whitehouse, a teacher from Truro & Penwith College, emphasised the importance of such industry visits. “Getting students into industry environments is so important so they can see firsthand what it’s like and what’s involved. The trip definitely inspired some of the students and will have an impact on their vision for the future, a big thank you to Imerys for allowing the students the opportunity,” he said.

Imerys Welcomes Future Engineers

Clare Sleeman, Talent and Administration Manager at Imerys, expressed the company’s commitment to fostering young talent. “Imerys is proud to offer the next generation of engineers the opportunity to see and learn about our career opportunities. Our plant tours give an invaluable insight into how the machinery works in an industrial setting. Thanks to Mike and Alan for giving up their time, and also to Truro & Penwith College students for visiting us. We welcome the opportunity to host more students in the future,” she said.

The visit was an inspiring and educational experience, leaving a lasting impression on the students and sparking interest in potential careers at Imerys.
