£1 Million Boost for Policing in Devon & Cornwall’s Crime Hotspots

Published On: 9 May 2024Last Updated: 9 May 2024By

In a significant move to combat anti-social behaviour (ASB) and serious violence, Devon & Cornwall Police have commenced additional patrols following a £1 million grant from the Home Office.

This funding is part of a broader strategy introduced by the government in 2023, aimed at addressing crime hotspots effectively.

Targeted Areas for Enhanced Policing

The police force has pinpointed six critical areas across Devon and Cornwall for this heightened police presence. Barnstaple, Exeter, Newquay, Plymouth, Torquay, and Truro have been identified based on crime data accumulated over recent years, indicating a regular occurrence of public concerns. This strategic approach ensures that patrols are concentrated where they are most needed.

Boost in Police Resources

To support this project, Devon & Cornwall Police are dedicating 25 officers to neighbourhood support teams. These officers will augment the existing neighbourhood teams, providing additional resources to tackle local crime and safety issues. The increased police presence is expected to make a significant difference in the everyday lives of both residents and visitors in the affected areas.

A Word from the Authorities

Glen, the Assistant Chief Constable and the force’s lead for local policing, commented on the operational side of this strategy. “We launched Op Loki last year to bring targeted, highly visible neighbourhood policing to the Force’s Safer Streets funded areas. This new funding allows us to expand our efforts and continue building strong community relationships,” he stated.

Alison, the Police and Crime Commissioner, emphasised the community’s concerns, “Anti-social behaviour and serious violence remain top priorities for our residents, and it is essential that we address these issues head-on to restore peace and safety in our communities.”

Patrols and Community Engagement

The additional patrols began on Wednesday, 1 May and are set to continue until April 2025. This period will focus on intense community engagement and visible policing efforts to deter crime and provide reassurance to the public.

Residents are encouraged to engage with their local policing teams and participate in upcoming community contact point events. Information about these initiatives and updates on local policing can be found on the Devon & Cornwall Police official website or by signing up for the Devon and Cornwall Alert system.

For reporting crimes or in cases of emergency, residents should visit the police website or use the appropriate emergency contact numbers provided there.

This comprehensive approach marks a significant step forward in tackling persistent issues affecting the safety and quality of life in Devon and Cornwall, ensuring a secure environment for all.
