Discover How Police Dog Skye Became a Star at Callington Community College!

Students at Callington Community College experienced an unusual lesson last Friday when they received a surprise visit from a passive drugs dog named Skye and her handler, Police Constable Steve Waters.

The visit, part of a broader educational effort by the Devon & Cornwall police, aimed to reinforce the dangers of illegal drugs among young students.

Engaging Education

Throughout the academic year, police officers routinely visit schools across Cornwall to educate students about the risks associated with drug use and possession. These visits, often unannounced and known only to a select few staff members, serve as a practical demonstration of the police’s strict stance on drug issues in the region.

A Day with Skye

During their visit, Skye and Steve interacted with students and teachers in various randomly selected classrooms. The focus was on engaging as many pupils as possible, showcasing how passive drugs dogs operate and reminding students of the legal and personal consequences of drug involvement. Teachers also participated by walking past Skye, illustrating that drug prevention awareness is crucial for both students and staff.

Positive Outcomes

The response from the school was overwhelmingly positive. PC Jess Floyd, also from the Callington neighbourhood policing team, shared her enthusiasm about the day’s success. She highlighted the interaction between the students, Skye, and the police officers, noting the educational impact of demonstrating a drug detection dog at work. Jess expressed satisfaction with the visit, particularly as no illegal substances were detected and the team managed to reach their largest audience yet—a double class of around 50 children.
