Legendary Prop Marlen Walker Set to Retire After Illustrious Career
Cornish Pirates’ prop Marlen Walker, a formidable and experienced front-rower, is set to retire at the end of this season.
The Auckland-born player, who turns 36 later this month, has been a stalwart for the team since his debut in 2015, and he has played 184 games for the club.
Memorable Career and Role Model
Marlen initially joined the team in January 2015 on a short-term contract from Weston-Super-Mare, and he quickly established himself as a key player. He made his debut a month later in a thrilling 45-38 victory against Bristol. Over the years, Marlen has not only proven himself as a talented prop but also as a respected leader and mentor for the younger members of the squad.
High Praise from the Coach
Joint head coach Alan Paver spoke highly of Marlen, noting, “Marlen is a great man who has been amazing for us both on and off the field.” Alan also highlighted Marlen’s exceptional commitment, fantastic leadership, and talent as a top-level prop in the Championship.
Future Plans and Testimonial Match
Marlen is expected to take on a coaching role outside Cornwall in the future. However, fans will still have the opportunity to see him play during his eagerly awaited MJW Testimonial match, which is scheduled to take place at the Mennaye Field on 3rd August 2024. The club and its supporters wish Marlen and his family all the best in his future endeavours.
