In a concerted effort to address the rising concerns of shoplifting and anti-social behaviour, Truro recently witnessed a Safer Business Action Day (SaBA), bringing together the Truro neighbourhood policing team and an array of partner agencies.

This collaboration aimed to create a more secure environment for both businesses and the public within the city centre.

A Unified Approach

The neighbourhood policing team, alongside Cornwall Council, Safer Cornwall, Truro City Council, Young People Cornwall, Cornwall Fire and Rescue, Shopwatch, and Truro BID (Truro Business Improvement District), embarked on this mission following extensive joint planning. This planning identified shoplifting and anti-social behaviour as primary focuses due to their adverse impact on local retailers and the general public’s enjoyment of the city centre.

National trends show a significant rise in retail crime, including shoplifting, violence against retail staff, and organised crime, prompting the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) to release a retail crime action plan. In response, Truro’s policing team has prioritised tackling these issues head-on.

Day of Action Highlights

The Safer Business Action Day saw the deployment of plain-clothed officers to provide guidance and reassurance in shops frequently targeted by shoplifters. Concurrently, officers from the neighbourhood team conducted high-visibility patrols, engaging with local businesses and the community to address concerns and foster a sense of security.

Innovative approaches, such as monitoring CCTV and utilising Shopwatch radios, played a crucial role in this operation. Shopwatch, in particular, facilitates collaboration between retailers, partner agencies, and the police to combat crimes affecting local businesses.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

Steve Lennon, Truro’s ASB Officer, and the Truro Rangers continued their commitment to reassuring retailers and deterring crime by patrolling the city centre. Furthermore, Truro Safe, Young People Cornwall, Trading Standards, and Cornwall Fire and Rescue service hosted stalls, allowing the public to engage with the teams directly.

Crime prevention officers also stood ready to offer vital advice and guidance, underscoring the day’s community-focused approach.

PC Richie Wilson expressed satisfaction with the day’s outcomes, emphasising the importance of collaboration in addressing local issues and enhancing Truro’s safety. He extended his gratitude to all participants for their crucial support and dedication.

Buoyed by the success of this SaBA, plans are already underway for a subsequent day of action later in the year, aiming to continue the positive momentum in making Truro a safer place for residents and visitors alike.
