Cornwall Runner Embarks on Four-Day Ultramarathon Challenge for Children’s Cancer Charity
In an inspiring display of endurance and compassion, Ed Nettleship, a 24-year-old running enthusiast from St Dominick, near Callington, Cornwall, has set his sights on an extraordinary challenge to support the fight against childhood cancer.
Over the Easter weekend, Ed will undertake four ultramarathons in as many days, aiming to cover at least 50 kilometres each day, with a goal of reaching 68 kilometres on the final day. This daunting endeavour is in aid of the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG), a leading charity dedicated to supporting children with cancer and their families.
Ed, who began running just three years ago, has rapidly progressed from marathons to ultramarathons, seeking to push his limits further. Following a solo 40-mile run shortly after completing his second marathon in York last October, he conceived the idea of running multiple ultramarathons over consecutive days. Despite the rigorous demands of his business-to-business sales and marketing job, Ed has dedicated himself to a disciplined training regimen, often starting his day at 4 am to accommodate his workouts.
With the understanding of the immense physical and mental challenge ahead, Ed remains optimistic, fueled by the cause he supports. “It’s a big challenge,” he acknowledges, bracing himself for the taxing journey and the inevitable questioning of his motivations. Yet, the charity’s mission provides him with a profound sense of purpose and an unyielding motivation. “I’m doing this for a cause greater than myself, so I have to do it,” Ed stated, emphasising the additional motivation that the charitable aspect brings to his endeavour.
Ed’s commitment extends beyond the physical trials as he embarks on this journey predominantly alone, with routes he planned himself. While family and friends will provide essential support with nourishment and hydration, the solitary nature of the runs adds a significant mental challenge. Reflecting on the differences between solo runs and organised races, Ed notes the heightened difficulty without the encouragement of spectators, highlighting the “you against you” aspect of his challenge.
Choosing to support CCLG was an easy decision for Ed, who was moved by the charity’s comprehensive approach to battling childhood cancer through research, medicine development, and family support. His goal is to raise as much money as possible to make a meaningful difference in the lives of affected families, marking his first foray into fundraising with a deeply personal and impactful cause.
As Ed prepares to face the gruelling four-day test of endurance starting on Good Friday, March 29, the support from the community and his loved ones has been overwhelming. Grateful for the encouragement and donations, Ed extends his thanks to everyone who has contributed to his mission. “Thank you to the people that have donated and to all my friends and my family who are super supportive of me,” he expressed, acknowledging the vital role of his support network in pushing him to exceed his limits for a noble cause.
To support Ed Nettleship in his ultramarathon challenge for the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group, donations can be made through his Just Giving fundraising page. His endeavor not only showcases remarkable physical resilience but also highlights the power of community and the impact of individual efforts on broader societal challenges.
