The Cornwall Garden Society (CGS) is set to host a pair of engaging lectures this March, led by renowned camellia expert, Jeremy Wilson. With a career in horticulture spanning over three decades, Wilson brings a treasure trove of knowledge to this year’s attendees. The lectures are scheduled to take place at two prestigious locations in Cornwall, promising an enlightening experience for gardening enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Jeremy Wilson’s first lecture, titled “A History of Tea,” is slated for 7:30 PM on Tuesday, 12th March at The Alverton in Truro. This talk will delve into the captivating journey of tea, tracing its origins from the Camellia sinensis plant to its status as a beloved global beverage. Attendees will be treated to a comprehensive exploration of tea’s historical and cultural significance, enriched by Wilson’s extensive background in horticulture.

The following day, on Wednesday, 13th March at 2:30 PM, Wilson will present his second lecture, “Camellias: How to Grow and Show,” at the Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth. This presentation is particularly timely for Cornwall’s camellia growers, as it comes just ahead of the CGS 2024 Spring Flower Show. Wilson will share invaluable insights into cultivating and presenting camellias, equipping participants with the skills to excel in the horticultural classes at the upcoming show, scheduled for the 6th and 7th of April at the Royal Cornwall Showground.
Wilson’s expertise is not limited to the theoretical; he has practical experience as the proprietor of Strete Gate Camellias, located near Dartmouth in South Devon. Since taking over in 2011, he has successfully propagated and sold more than 500 different camellia varieties. His accomplishments include prestigious awards, such as a Gold medal from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) shows, and he is actively preparing for this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
In addition to sharing his knowledge through lectures, Wilson will also offer a selection of camellias for sale at both events. These lectures are accessible free of charge to CGS members, while non-members are encouraged to attend and support the society through donations.
